The chateau is very well worth visiting. The leaflet that you can follow gives a very informative and concise history and explains the historical logic of why the town is the way it is, which is a bit scrappy and lacking in architectural unity. But like anywhere that’s old, it begins to make sense when you know some of its history.
There were very few other tourists there today, probably no more than ten or so, so it’s easy just to wander around at your own pace.
This is the Gilded Chamber, where Françoise de Foix came to a sticky end at the hands of her jealous husband, Jean de Laval, in a large pool of blood. Every night of 16-17 October her ghost returns, with her husband and king Francois I.
